On Friday, one person was killed and three were injured in a fatal car accident involving two SUVs and two semitrailers on the Indiana Toll Road. The passenger in a gray Hyundai SUV was killed when a Volvo semitrailer crashed into the Jeep SUV that was stopped behind them.
The two SUVs were stopped behind an international semitrailer in a construction zone in eastern St. Joseph County. Traffic was stopped because of two other crashes that had recently occurred.
The crash happened when the Volvo semitrailer hit the Jeep, and the trailer it was carrying, at full speed, sending all four vehicles another 300 feet into the center median.
Police arrived on the scene to find the Volvo semitrailer on top of the Hyundai, with both passengers trapped inside. The driver of the Hyundai was taken to the hospital while the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the Jeep was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center to get treated for lacerations and a head injury. The driver of the Volvo semitrailer was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment for lacerations. The driver of the international semitrailer and the driver of the Jeep did not sustain injuries in the accident.
