The award is given to lawyers who have helped advance Indiana law through their success in the courtroom and involvement in the legislative process, shown a commitment to making a positive impact through pro bono work and community service, and demonstrated a high degree professionalism and civility.

The award’s namesake, Max Goodwin, is a former president of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association (ITLA). He displayed a tireless commitment to clients and a practical approach to issues in the legal arena and in life.

Barth focuses on personal injury law, specifically motor vehicle accident, premises liability and animal bite cases.

Barth has been first or second chair in 25 trials. He also secured a $1.7 million verdict in a bench trial and worked on 21 different appeals.

Barth also gives back to the community, volunteering for the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association’s Lawyer of the Day and serving as a board member of the Presbyterian Church of LaPorte.

Another significant accomplishment is the argument he made to the Indiana Supreme Court to help preserve dramshop liability cases.

The 2024 Max Goodwin Young Lawyer of the Year award is the latest recognition of Barth’s commitment to the legal profession. In 2020, The National Trial Lawyers presented Barth the Top 40 Under 40 Civil Plaintiff award. The American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys presented Mr. Barth with the 10 Best Client Satisfaction Award.
