One of the toughest things about the legal process involving personal injury lawsuits is that, for the plaintiff, this is almost always their first time through it.

How do you know what to expect in your dealing with a personal injury lawyer?

Many of our clients have never had to do a significant amount of business with a law firm before, and are intimidated by the legal process. Especially when you’re dealing with the pain and difficulty of a serious bodily injury, it can be frightening to have your fate in the hands of judges, jurors, and attorneys whom you’ve never met before.

Here are some things you should be able to expect from your attorney:

1. They should be attentive. An experienced personal injury attorney recognizes both what’s at stake for you in a lawsuit, and the fact that the process is unfamiliar to you. They should be your guide throughout the case, and should help you to develop reasonable expectations for the progress and outcomes of the suit. That doesn’t mean that they always pick up the phone on the second ring (they have other clients, as well), but it does mean that you shouldn’t have to wait and wonder when you’ll hear from them. Every time you speak with a lawyer, they should let you know when you should expect to hear from them next.

2. They should be informative. It takes years of formal education in law school, followed by even more years of experience in the ins and outs of the court system, to truly develop expertise in personal injury law. Your lawyer can’t be expected to explain all the minutiae of the proceedings to you, but they should be able to explain to you in layman’s terms what is happening. His time is precious, after all; he has other people he’s helping. If they can’t do that, you have no way of knowing if your interests are being properly represented.

3. They should be fighting for you. Make no mistake: personal injury law isn’t easy. Defendants and their lawyers will do all they can to keep you  from getting a fair shake in court, and it takes more than just having the truth on your side to make your case. It takes a fighter, with the dedication to make your case as strong as possible, by finding the right witnesses and making the right choices about how to steer your case. If you work with Pfeifer, Morgan, and Stesiak, you know you’ve already got all of those things and more.
