baby powder spilledLast week, in an 11-1 decision, a jury in a St. Louis, Mo. court ruled in favor of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in a lawsuit filed by a 55-year-old woman from Tennessee who claimed that using J&J Baby Powder for more than 30 years caused her to develop ovarian cancer in 2013.

Johnson & Johnson lost the previous three talcum powder lawsuits that went to trial in the same Missouri state court. The plaintiffs in these cases were awarded a total of $195 million, including:

  • $72 million in February 2016 to the family of a woman who was killed by ovarian cancer after using J&J products for feminine hygiene for many years
  • $55 million in May 2016 for woman who claimed J&J’s products were directly responsible for her cancer
  • $70 million in October 2016 to a woman who claimed she developed cancer because she used J&J’s Baby Powder

More than 2,500 similar lawsuits are pending in the state court in St. Louis.

Johnson & Johnson Claims Talcum Powder Products are Safe

Despite these lawsuits and research showing a link between developing ovarian cancer and using talcum powder-based products for feminine hygiene, J&J has maintained that there is insufficient evidence for this connection. The company also asserts that it has properly marketed the product, despite claims that talcum powder-based products do not adequately warn consumers about the risks.
